Discover the remarkable world of spiders through a substantial programme of advanced study spanning biology, evolution, behaviour, ecology, conservation, cognition, welfare and scientific research. From the extraordinary properties of spider silk and venom to tarantula biology, tropical diversity, fossil spiders and questions of pain and sentience, the programme combines a rigorous foundation in arachnology with opportunities to specialise in the aspects of spider life that fascinate you most.
Designed for serious enthusiasts and independent learners, the 360-credit Advanced Diploma progresses through three levels of study and culminates in an independent research project. Study the complete programme over three years or longer, or begin with an individual Level 4 module and build from there.

Arachnology is the scientific study of the spider family. Whilst true spiders and tarantulas form the core of the programme, other arachnid groups are also studied, with some opportunities for specialism.
Asynchronous lectures, reading materials and extensive resources are shared on our Moodle platform to which you will be granted access. The course is delivered entirely online, under the guidance of our expert lecturers and academic staff. The academic year begins in September but you can also enter the programme in January.
Broadly similar to a three year undergraduate degree, there are three levels (levels 4 to 6). In level 4 (year 1) you will study four core modules to give you the foundations of Arachnology. In year 2 you study at level 5, with further core modules to advance your knowledge, and begin to make choices from our optional modules. In year 3 you will specialise by choosing from a variety of optional modules, and complete your dissertation on a topic chosen in collaboration with the academic staff and your supervisor. The modules are detailed below.
Each 15 credit module is £200, with a 30 credit module costing £400. This includes everything for the module, with no hidden cost, with the exception of any text books you wish to buy. The entire programme therefore costs £4800, but you can study a module at a time and exit the programme when you wish. You will receive a certificate for each module, and a certificate of completion should you exit early which summarises the extent of your study.
As these programmes are new, we are offering a limited number of places with a scholarship discount of 80%. T&Cs apply. This is an excellent opportunity to learn something new, and be involved with the development of a new course, at a really low cost. Email us today to find out more (info@wessexacademia.co.uk).
Foundations (120 credits)
Introduces the diversity, evolution and study of spiders and other arachnids, establishing the biological and scientific foundations of arachnology.
Examines spider anatomy, physiology, development, reproduction, sensory systems and other fundamental aspects of spider biology.
Explores spider behaviour and ecological relationships, including predation, communication, reproduction, habitat use and interactions with other organisms.
Develops essential practical and scientific skills in observation, identification, microscopy, fieldwork, data collection, analysis and scientific communication.
Developing expertise (60 credits)
Examines the evolutionary history, phylogeny, systematics and global diversity of spiders and the major lineages within Araneae.
Explores spider conservation, population and habitat surveying, biological recording and the application of arachnological knowledge to environmental practice.
Develops practical skills in identifying and recording British spiders using morphological characteristics, identification resources and appropriate taxonomic methods.
Examines the biology, diversity, behaviour and ecology of Theraphosidae alongside evidence-based principles of captive husbandry and welfare.
Explores the production, properties and biological functions of spider silk together with its potential scientific, technological and biomedical applications.
Examines the composition, evolution and biological functions of spider venoms and their significance in predation, defence, medicine and biotechnology.
Introduces the diversity, biology, evolution and ecology of the principal arachnid groups beyond the spiders.
Advanced study and specialisms (75 credits)
Develops advanced skills in research design, literature evaluation, data analysis and scientific communication in preparation for independent arachnological research.
Provides the opportunity to undertake a substantial independent investigation of an arachnological question and communicate the resulting research in an extended academic study.
Critically examines evidence concerning spider cognition, learning, memory, nociception, pain and sentience and the methodological challenges involved in studying them.
Provides an advanced examination of spider behavioural ecology, including communication, courtship, predation, navigation, sociality and behavioural adaptation.
Explores the diversity, ecology, biogeography and conservation of spiders and other arachnids within tropical ecosystems.
Examines threats to spider populations and applies conservation theory to their monitoring, management and protection.
Examines the principles and practice of maintaining a diverse range of spider taxa in captivity, with emphasis on environmental requirements, behaviour, breeding and welfare.
Critically considers the welfare and ethical issues arising from human interactions with spiders in research, captivity, pest control, trade and conservation.
Examines the spider fossil record and its contribution to understanding the origins, diversification and evolutionary history of Araneae.
Explores spiders within houses, gardens and other human-modified environments and considers their ecology, adaptation and relationships with people.
Examines representations and meanings of spiders across mythology, religion, folklore, art, literature and popular culture and their influence on human attitudes towards spiders.
